Nendoroids and their role in the collecting world

Nendoroid is a unique and beloved part of the collecting world, created by the Japanese company Good Smile Company. These charming figures take inspiration from anime, manga, and video games, and have become a significant part of collecting culture, not only in Japan but worldwide. In this article, we will explore Nendoroid figures, their popularity, and their place in the collecting world, and how they compare to other collectibles such as plush toys.

What is Nendoroid?

Nendoroid is a series of PVC figures characterized by their large, expressive eyes and chibi-style, making them both cute and easily recognizable. Each Nendoroid comes with different facial expressions, accessories, and poseable joints, allowing collectors to customize and display their figures in various ways. This customizability, combined with detailed design, has made Nendoroid a sought-after item among collectors.

History and development of Nendoroids

The Nendoroid line was first launched in 2006, and has since expanded to include hundreds of different figures from a multitude of sources. The original Nendoroid series consisted of only a few figures, but over time Good Smile Company has managed to attract licenses from well-known anime and games, resulting in a constant stream of new additions to the collection.

The collecting world's growing interest

Interest in Nendoroids has grown exponentially over the years. From being a niche product in Japan, they have now become global phenomena, with collectors chasing new releases and rare figures from all corners of the world. This has created a vibrant secondary market where figures can be bought and sold at higher prices, especially rare or limited editions.

Nendoroid vs. Plush Toys

An interesting aspect of the collecting world is the comparison between Nendoroids and more traditional collectibles like plush toys. While plush toys are often known for being soft, cuddly, and often associated with childhood memories, Nendoroids offer a completely different experience. Here are some points highlighting differences and similarities:

• Design and detail: Nendoroids are created with incredible detail, making them more aesthetically pleasing to some collectors. Plush toys, on the other hand, are often more simply designed but can be just as charming.
• Customizability: One of Nendoroids' great advantages is their customization options. With different accessories and facial expressions, they can change character and style. Plush toys do not offer the same type of customization.
• Collector's value: While plush toys can have their own value depending on brand and rarity, rare Nendoroid figures can sell for significantly higher prices on the secondary market.
• Emotional value: Plush toys are often linked to emotional memories and comfort, while Nendoroids are collected more for their design and character affiliation.

Collecting trends and the Nendoroid phenomenon

Like many other collectibles, Nendoroids also have their own defined collecting trend. Recently, we have seen an increase in exclusive figures, event-based releases, and collaborations with various artists. These special editions help to boost interest and create competition among collectors.

Social media and the Nendoroid community

Social media has played a big role in the spread of Nendoroid culture. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become home for Nendoroid lovers who share their collections, create unique poses, and use tags to get more people to engage. This community has helped drive Nendoroid sales and has also enabled more people to learn about the figures.

Nendoroids and their cultural impact

Beyond their purely commercial value, Nendoroids have also gained a place in popular culture. They represent a part of the modern collecting world where nostalgia and passion for anime and games unite. Many collectors see Nendoroids as a collection of artworks that celebrate their favorite characters and stories.

The future of Nendoroid collections

With the rapid development in entertainment and technology, it's exciting to think about the future of Nendoroid collections. With more anime series and games being released regularly, collectors can expect an abundance of new figures to choose from. It is also possible that we will see even greater innovations in design and collectibility, which could change the way we view collectibles like Nendoroids and plush toys.
