Gundam is more than just a popular anime – it's a cultural icon spanning several decades and has garnered a dedicated following worldwide. Since its debut, Gundam has expanded in various directions, creating opportunities for fans to engage through collecting and building model kits. In this article, we take a deep dive into Gundam's history, its impact, and what makes the model kits so special.
The Origin of Gundam
The Gundam series was first introduced in 1979 with the anime series "Mobile Suit Gundam," created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and produced by Sunrise. The series challenged traditional concepts in mecha anime by incorporating more realistic elements and human conflicts. It wasn't just about robots fighting each other; it also focused on the people who piloted them. This added a new dimension to the story and made it much more relatable.
Early Success
After the initial broadcast of "Mobile Suit Gundam," the series continued to evolve through several sequels and spin-off series. Even during its initial run, Gundam found a diverse audience segment, leading to the series becoming ingrained in Japanese popular culture. Over the years, the franchise concept developed several icons and models, with a wide range of mechas that fans adored.
From Anime to Model Kits
In the 1980s, with the success of Gundam anime, Bandai began producing model kits, which became known as Gunpla (Gundam Plastic Models). These kits gave fans the opportunity to create their favorite mobile suits and soon experienced an explosion in popularity. Gunpla kits differed from other models on the market by offering a unique combination of challenge, creativity, and collector's value.
Gunpla: Development and Success
Gunpla technology has evolved significantly since the early 80s. From simple kits that were difficult to assemble, Bandai has now developed various quality levels of model kits, including HG (High Grade), RG (Real Grade), PG (Perfect Grade), and MG (Master Grade). Each of these levels offers different complexities for enthusiasts, from beginners to experienced builders.
The Culture Around Model Kits
In Japan and many other places around the world, Gundam model kits have become a central part of model building culture. Many fans are not only engaged in building their models but also in customizing them with paints, decals, and accessories. This creative process has given rise to a whole new hobby and perfected the concept of detailed model kits.
The Difference Between Model Kits and Finished Models
One of the most appealing aspects of Gunpla is the significant difference between buying a kit and a finished model. Kits offer an interactive experience where the builder gains a deeper understanding of the model and a sense of accomplishment when they finally see their work materialize. This is something that most finished models cannot offer, making kits incredibly popular among hobbyists.
Global Impact and Community
Gundam and Gunpla have created a strong global community where enthusiasts share their creations and experiences. There are online forums, social media, and events where fans can gather and discuss all things Gundam. Competitions and expos to showcase builds have emerged, driving innovation and creativity among builders. This community not only provides support but also serves as a source of inspiration for many of these artists.
Model Kits as Art
For many, working with model kits is not just a hobby, but an art form. Advanced model builders create fantastic dioramas and scenes that go far beyond what is offered in the pre-made kits. These builders spend hours, sometimes days, perfecting the details, making their creations works of art in themselves. The discourse around technique and creativity within the Gunpla culture should not be underestimated.
Collector's Value and Investment
Model kits can represent a valuable investment for many. Rare and discontinued models can quickly increase in price and become sought-after collector's items. Many collectors have adorned their homes with impressive collections of model kits that are not just about building and displaying them, but also about investing in the future. It is an exciting part of the hobby that attracts both old and new fans.
The Future of Gundam and Model Kits
With the ever-growing popularity of Gundam and Gunpla, the future is bright. Bandai continues to invest in new technologies and designs to provide fans with higher quality and more refined model kits. With new anime series and films constantly being produced, interest in these fantastic model kits also grows. It would not be surprising if we see new generations of hobbyists following in the footsteps of their predecessors and exploring the world of Gundam.
An Unforgettable Experience of Creativity
Building Gundam models, or model kits as they are also called, is more than just a hobby; it is an opportunity to express oneself creatively, learn new skills, and a path to community. Fans of Gundam can find a sense of satisfaction in their building process and, above all, a chance to preserve and honor history while creating something of their own.
